Director Patrik-Ian Polk tackles the ongoing struggle with sexuality and spirituality in his fifth film, Blackbird. Scheduled to premiere at the Pan Afrikan Film Festival in Los Angeles on February 17th, Blackbird is a coming-of-age story of a young man in a small country town attempting to balance issue such as being a teenager, discovering his sexuality, and his family’s religious views.
Starring Academy-Award winner Mo’Nique, former Grey’s Anatomy star Isiah Washington, former Danity Kane member D. Woods(who knew she could act) and newcomer Julian Walker, I’m sure Blackbird will give an insight to many gay and lesbian teens that are torn between understanding their sexuality and religious beliefs.
As a fan of Patrick-Ian’s previous films including Punks(which I need him or someone to release it on DVD), Noah’s Arc: The Wedding, and The Skinny, I am anticipating Patrick-Ian’s commentary on black gay life in Blackbird and the audience’s reaction to the storyline.
