Feeling inspired from the new Toni Braxton and Babyface duet album, The King of R&B, R. Kelly states he’s going to try to convince The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Mary J. Blige to do an duets album to go along with their upcoming tour(this sounds good on paper but continue reading).
In a recent interview with fashion magazine, V, Kellz mentions that’s he and MJB are recording a song for their upcoming King and Queen Tour, possibly a whole album. “It’s a very exciting thing when two people like Mary and me come together. It’s never been done, but it kind of makes sense, and you’re like, Wow! And this is very exciting for me because I’m a fan of hers. I’m in the studio right now working on a song for me and Mary. I’m even looking forward to proposing that we do a whole album together. But this is the first I’ve mentioned it. The “King & Queen” album”, says Kellz.
Now this idea sounds good on paper but like Meryl Streep, I have some doubts(R.I.P. Philip Seymour Hoffman). It is a fact that both R. Kelly and MJB are the King and Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul, have catalogs of hits, and have influenced today’s artists. These two doing a concert would be an R&B fan’s wet dream and I am sure it will sell out.
However, a duet album from these two is another story. Unless the whole album is going be full of club bangers and uptempos like their known for, I don’t picture Mary singing sexual songs and I don’t picture Kellz singing about getting to your happy. The idea works for Babyface and Toni because let’s be honest, their songs have always been the same. Also with the decline of album sales for black artists, I believe this album would be a best seller if it was being released in the early 2000s. However anything is possible.
